Glossy Black-Cockatoo Birding Day

For those who have already registered, a workshop on GBC identification and general survey information will be held on the 6th May 2009 at The Nerang Bicentennial Hall, Nerang Southport road. 6.30-8.30pm. The workshop is free and free surveying t-shirts will be handed out.

Information

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo is listed as a threatened species in Queensland and the eastern subspecies Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami is distributed throughout south-eastern Queensland. The status of the SEQ population is difficult to determine as the species is cryptic in its behaviour and use of natural habitats such that despite a number of agencies maintaining databases for many years there is still little knowledge of the estimated population size and distribution of the species in the region.

To address this shortcoming, the Glossy Black Conservancy are organising a census. The objective of the census is to gain a better estimate of the Glossy Black population size, enabling researchers at Griffith University to assess the viability of the population located on the coast, as well as determine habitat areas of frequent use. This information will help to create and improve conservation strategies for this species.

Want to help?

You can help by participating in the census by either searching your own property or searching a known GBC locality in a group.

You will need to follow the link to the GBC Birding Day Registration form to enter the details of you and your group. You will also need to attend a GBC Identification Workshop (Late April 2009 and the first week in May) where researchers from Griffith University will instruct you and your group on how to fill in field data forms and correctly identify a Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
